May 22, 2016: Vyshyvanka Day celebration in Vancouver

Iryna Shyroka (UCC – Vancouver)

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress supports the International Vyshyvanka Day (Всесвітний День Вишиванки), which is being held this year on May 19.

Vyshyvanka

Through a grass roots initiative in Ukraine, the third Thursday of May has been designated to the International Vyshyvanka Day (Всесвітний День Вишиванки). This day is a wonderful opportunity for Ukrainians, those of Ukrainian heritage and friends of Ukraine around the world, to wear a vyshyvanka (embroidered shirt) to demonstrate their pride in Ukrainian culture and heritage and to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Canada is one of 50 countries around the world in which Ukrainians take part in the International Vyshyvanka Day (Всесвітний День Вишиванки).

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress asks that provincial councils, local branches, and member organizations encourage their membership and provincial and municipal politicians to wear a vyshyvanka on May 19 as a symbol of our unity and our shared heritage.

The Vancouver Ukrainian community is going further and it is holding a special event – Vyshyvanka Day on Sunday, May 22. Everyone is welcome to join, bring their best Vyshyvanka’s and have fun together. The event is going to be in a form of a potluck in Central Park in Burnaby. The meeting time is 4pm. It’s a great opportunity to come and celebrate the joy as well as to be a part of the international Ukrainian community all around the world.
