Lieutenant-General Wynnyk, Commander of the Canadian Army


The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) congratulates Lieutenant-General Paul Wynnyk, CMM, MSM, CD, on his appointment as Commander of the Canadian Army. Lieutenant-General Wynnyk was appointed Commander on July 14, at a ceremony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Lieutenant-General Wynnyk’s late father Walter Wynnyk, who served during WWII with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, was born to Ukrainian immigrants in Stry, Alberta.

Lieutenant-General  Paul Wynnyk was commissioned into the Canadian Military Engineers in 1986. He has held numerous command appointments and most recently served as Commander, Canadian Forces Intelligence Command and Deputy Commander of the Canadian Army. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal and the Afghan Baryal Medal (First Class).

During his acceptance speech, Lieutenant-General Wynnyk thanked his wife Marianne, his mother Joan and his father for their support on his career path. Speaking about his father, Lieutenant-General Wynnyk stated, “My late father Walter Wynnyk was the son of Ukrainian immigrants, and part of that Great Generation of Canadians who fought during the Second World War and returned to build the Canada that we know today.”

“On behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian community, I congratulate Lieutenant-General Wynnyk on his appointment. His is a truly inspirational and truly Canadian story. I wish Lieutenant-General Wynnyk all success as Commander of the Canadian Army,” stated Paul Grod, National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. “I thank all members of our Armed Forces for their valour in service to our great country.”
