DakhaBrakha is a quartet from Kiev whose sound is at once mesmerizing and mystical, melding soulful Ukrainian folk with the jazz and trance sounds that typify World Music. Aptly named, “DakhaBrakha” means “give/take” in the Ukrainian. Mixing the fundamental structure of folk music with free-form improvisation, the Kiev, Ukrainian “ethno-chaos” band DakhaBrakha creates a mesmerizing world of unexpected and engaging new music.
On stage, Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instrumentation melds with the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range to create a trans-national sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. www.dakhabrakha.com.ua
Opening for Dakhabrakha is Vancouver’s own musical ZEELLIA, a six member ensemble of three female vocalists and three instrumentalists established in 1991. Led by Beverly Dobrinsky, they weave a mystical spell singing and playing Slavic folksongs and dances from Ukraine, the Balkan and Baltic States, and the Canadian prairies.
The blessings and the curses, the water, the wood, the fire, the fields, and of course, the herbs all combine to give voice to a unique Slavic Canadian sentiment which respects its Ukrainian roots and celebrates its Canadian context.
