Ukrainian Canadian Congress Memorandum
On March 3, Russia’s illegal trial of Ukrainian MP and delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Nadiya Savchenko was abruptly postponed until March 9, and she was not allowed to make her closing statement.
On March 4, in response, Savchenko declared a hunger strike (refusing both food and water) in protest of her continuing illegal imprisonment in Russia. She declared that she would continue her hunger strike “until [her] return to Ukraine, alive or dead.”
Savchenko’s attorney, Mark Feygin has called for a Worldwide Action Day of support for Nadiya Savchenko’s freedom to be held on March 9.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress calls on Provincial Councils, Local Branches and Member Organizations to hold rallies and demonstrations on March 9 in their cities demanding the release of Nadiya Savchenko and all other Ukrainian citizens illegally imprisoned by the Russian Federation.
Please use the hashtag #FreeSavchenko on posters and signs.
Please inform the National Office of any rallies and demonstrations that are being held on March 9 in your city by email at orest.zakydalsky@ucc.ca or by phone at 613-232-8822.
In Vancouver, BC rally will be held at Art Gallery on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 6pm. More details are here on FB page of event – https://www.facebook.com/events/578720818968448/ (Due to time zones differences rally in Vancouver is scheduled on March 8 instead of March 9, so we can show our support before the court sitting in Moscow)
