Statement from Andrew Wilkinson on the commemoration of Holodomor Memorial Day
Vancouver – BC Liberal Leadership candidate Andrew Wilkinson issued the following statement to commemorate Holodomor Memorial Day:
“Today marks the 84th anniversary of the Holodomor, or Ukrainian Famine and Genocide, which resulted in the horrific murder of millions of innocent Ukrainian children, women and men.
“In 1932-1933, the tyrannical Soviet regime waged a cruel campaign of deliberate starvation upon the Ukrainian people to quash their aspirations of a free and independent Ukraine. Ukraine achieved independence in 1991, but to this day we must continue to stand firm and safeguard Ukrainian sovereignty.
“In British Columbia, the fourth Saturday of November is recognized as an opportunity to remember the victims of the Holodomor, pay tribute to the survivors and their descendants – many of whom have helped to shape our great province – and educate others about this tragic crime against humanity. Let us also think of all those around the world still in pursuit of human rights, freedom and justice.”
