Background:
Following months of demonstrations by pro-European Ukrainians, President Yanukovych fled Ukraine on February 21, 2014. Since then, Ukraine has descended into violence. Crimea has been annexed by Russia, and fighting has engulfed large sections of Eastern Ukraine. What explains the outbreak of violence, and how and why is Russia involved? What are the repercussions for Ukraine, Russia, the international community and its commitments to sovereignty and territorial integrity, and what are the ramifications for Canadian foreign policy?
In the interests of carefully and critically considering the reasons for, and implications of, the very complex, ongoing and volatile situation in Ukraine, leading Canadian and international scholars on Russian and Ukrainian politics and foreign policy will consider the crisis from various perspectives – economic, political, geopolitical, historical and security.
The roundtable is open to the public and questions will be taken from the floor.
