Scholarships for Studying In Canada for Children of Maidan Heroes

Svitlana Kominko (Vancouver)

“There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they grow up in peace.”

Kofi A. Annan, UN Secretary-General

The O.W.L. Canadian Ukrainian Education and Charity Trust was created by members of the Ukrainian community in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on March 2, 2014 in response to the revolutionary events in Ukraine. As the entire world community knows, in the period from November, 2013 until February, 2014 progressively thinking people of Ukraine through demonstrations fought for democracy and against the tyrannical, criminal and corrupted regime of President Yanukovych.

Unfortunately for demonstrators, Yanukovych used excessive physical force during these months that led to opening fire and using snipers against peaceful demonstrators. As a result of these brutal, anti-humanitarian actions, over a hundred people were killed and nearly 60 wounded people were burnt alive. Also a huge number of activists went missing and continued to die in hospitals after this event, due to the inflicted injuries. The majority of fallen for democracy were young people, who left behind children and families with no means to live. The new Ukrainian government and the entire Ukrainian community are working on assisting the families of the heroes. Ukrainians all over the world are participating in this too.

The purpose of our charity trust is to offer different scholarship programs and focus on providing assistance to the children of the fallen heroes and orphans. These various opportunities will enable them to receive Canadian education from ESL training to professional academic education in post-secondary institutions. We will focus on the upbringing of the young Ukrainian generation. This will not only help them get a good start in their future adult lives, but also will promote fair and democratic principles of Canadian society. As a result, this can be applied in the current reconstruction and future development of the Ukraine as a society and as a decent rightful member of the world community.
