Заява канадського парламентарія, ліберала Джіма Кариґяніса (Jim Karygiannis P.C., M.P.) щодо святкування 9 травня як ‘Дня перемоги’ в Україні викликала неоднозначну реакцію як української громади в Канаді, так і вищих урядових і парламентських кіл Канади.
Зокрема, Ліґа Українців Канади виступила із протестним відкритим листом, де наголошується, що “The statement by the Honourable Jim Karygiannis, P.C., M.P. and Liberal Critic for Multiculturalism, concerning “Victory Day in Ukraine” dated May 9, 2013 reflects a deep misunderstanding of the circumstances that Ukraine and many other nations found themselves in on that faithful day, May 8, 1945. For Ukrainians it is at best, a bitter-sweet commemoration of the official end to WWII. Sweet, because it represented the defeat of the totalitarian Nazi regime. However, in no way did it represent an end to the violence and bloodshed or some sort of “Victory Day in Ukraine.”
У своєму листі-відповіді, канадський парламентарій зазначив, що “Victory Day inUkraine is a National Holiday and it is a time to commemorate the sacrifices of Ukrainian soldiers who laid down their lives in defence of their countrymen. While the end of the Second World War is a rightful cause for celebration, Liberals also understand that the Ukrainian fight for freedom continued in the subsequent years, as Ukrainians were confronted with an oppressive Soviet regime.. Please accept my apology for the misunderstanding which the statement might have caused. “
Також жваво на цю заяву відгукнувся канадський Міністр Іміграції та Мультикультуралізму п. Джейсон Кенні (Jason Kenney), у своєму Твіттері він написав:
Disturbed to see the Liberal Party issue a statement celebrating the Soviet “Victory Day in Ukraine”, a holiday created by Leonid Brezhnev. — Jason Kenney (@kenneyjason) May 8, 2013
Проте, частина українських іммігрантів в Канаді, разом із російською діаспорою, очевидно схвально сприйняла заяву ліберала Кариґяніса, та, навпаки, обурилась коментарями міністра Кенні.
“День Перемоги” в Україні спричинив досить активну словесну перепалку у канадському парламенті:
