Radix Theatre presents the world premiere of Slowpoke from June 11-15, 2013 at The Russian Hall in Vancouver.

Slowpoke

The powerful work is performed and created by Billy Marchenski and Alison Denham, with direction by James Fagan Tait, and uses theatre, dance, and projections to tell the sometimes harrowing-sometimes humorous story of their real-life journey inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The work is both a recollection of this adventure, as well as a meditation on mankind’s new-found ability to catastrophically alter the environment.

Vancouver theatre and dance artist Billy Marchenski was inspired to create the exploratory work after visiting the Ukrainian National Chernobyl Museum in 2010. In the fall of 2011 he and his partner Alison Denham, also a highly acclaimed performing artist, packed their cameras and bags to visit the Exclusion Zone and develop Slowpoke.

Performed in the intimate confines of the Russian Hall, the narrative plays out on two levels: the first recounts Billy and Alison’s trip to the zone itself, including preparations for entering, encounters within, and unexpected outcomes. The second meditates on the enormous time scale the incident plays out on and what it means for humanity to possess the power to alter the environment so drastically. The work’s title is both a nod to this timeline and a reminder of Canada’s connection to nuclear energy as manufacturers of the Slowpoke reactor, built in the 1960’s and still in use in parts of Canada today.

The story’s telling will borrow from a traditional ‘vacation slideshow’ format, with Billy and Alison narrating photos displayed via a 1970’s slide projector (the same vintage as the Chernobyl Power Plant). Director James Fagan Tait will make full use of the two artists’ considerable talents, integrating elements of dance and physical theatre into the performance. The production features live traditional Ukrainian music by Beverly Dobrinsky.
